More About Kief

You Probably Already Have Some

If your grinder has a bottom chamber with a fine mesh above it, the pale powder collecting down there is kief. Every time you grind, a few trichomes break off and fall through. Left alone for a few months, that chamber holds a genuinely useful amount.

Buying it simply skips the waiting. Commercially sifted kief is collected from far more flower than one person gets through, and it is screened properly rather than gathered by accident.

Why Sifted Kief Is Cleaner

Grinder kief is a mixed bag. Alongside the trichome heads you get broken plant matter, small bits of leaf and whatever else fits through the mesh, which is why it burns darker and tastes greener than it should.

Proper dry sifting uses graded screens with specific mesh sizes, so the trichome heads pass through and most of the plant material does not. The finer the screen and the more carefully it is worked, the paler and cleaner the result. Colour is a reasonable guide — blond and sandy is a good sign, dark green means plant matter came along with it. What to Do With It

Top a Bowl

The easiest use. Pack flower, sprinkle a pinch of kief on top, and light around the edge rather than straight onto the powder — it burns fast and hot if you hit it directly. A little is plenty.

Twist It Into a Joint

Mix it through the ground flower rather than laying it in a stripe, or you will get uneven burning and a joint that runs down one side. Unlike sticky extracts, kief distributes easily because it is dry.

Press It Into Hash

This is the traditional route and it is genuinely satisfying. Heat and pressure fuse the loose trichomes into a solid block — the resin glands rupture and bind together. Done by hand it takes patience and warmth; done with a press it takes minutes. The result is hash, which is all hash has ever been.

Kief is a fine powder with enormous surface area relative to its weight, so it loses aroma faster than almost anything else we carry. Keep it airtight, cool and dark, and do not leave the container open on a table while you finish rolling.
