More About Our Shatter and Wax
Shatter Canada-wide, sold by the gram and in larger quantities, alongside wax and the softer textures that come out of the same process. Strain, texture and extraction method appear on each listing. This is the part of the concentrate range where you can judge a fair amount by eye before you ever open the package, which is unusual and worth knowing how to do.
Judging Shatter by Eye
Few products give you as much information visually. A photograph tells you more here than it does with flower.
Clarity and Colour
Good shatter is translucent — hold it up and you should be able to read through it. Cloudiness usually means residual moisture or fats that were not filtered out. Colour runs from pale gold to deep amber, and darker is not automatically worse: it often just means a later harvest or more terpene content. What you do not want is opaque, muddy or greenish, which points to plant material carried through the extraction.
Snap, Pull and Sugar
True shatter snaps cleanly at room temperature rather than bending. If it stretches like taffy, that is pull-and-snap — not a fault, just a slightly different consistency from a shorter purge. Sugaring or nucleation, where the slab turns grainy and opaque over time, is a natural change as the concentrate destabilises. It affects appearance and texture more than strength.
What Separates Shatter from Wax
Less than most people assume. Both come from the same extraction; what differs is what happens during the purge. Left undisturbed, the extract sets into a glassy sheet. Agitated or whipped, it takes on air and turns opaque and soft — that is wax, and budder is the same idea taken further.
So the choice between them is about handling rather than quality. Shatter is cleaner to portion and store; wax is easier to scoop and less fiddly with a warm tool. Neither is inherently stronger, and both are more potent than flower by a wide margin. Our live resin sits in the same family but starts from fresh-frozen material rather than dried.
Storage, and Why Shatter Changes
Heat, light and air all push concentrates toward sugaring. Keep them cool, dark and airtight, and use a silicone container or parchment rather than anything the extract will stick to permanently. Cold makes shatter easier to break cleanly — a few minutes in the fridge before portioning saves a lot of mess.
If a slab has gone grainy, it has not spoiled. It is simply older, and it will smoke much the same.
Start Smaller Than You Think
Concentrates are several times the strength of flower by weight, so a dose that looks trivially small is not. If you are moving over from flower, start with an amount that seems too small and work up from there — the difference between a comfortable session and an uncomfortable one is measured in fractions of a gram. Our cannabis guides cover the practical side, including options that do not need a full rig.
