India and Nepal

Charas is rubbed from living plants by hand rather than collected from dried material, which is why it is so labour-intensive and produced in such small quantities. Malana Cream and Black Bombay styles come from this tradition — soft, dark, and distinctly aromatic.

Telling Them Apart by Hand

You can learn most of what you need from a few seconds of handling. Warm a small piece between your fingers: Moroccan softens quickly and becomes pliable, Lebanese takes longer and crumbles before it bends, Afghan is already soft and goes tacky, charas stays dense and slightly oily throughout.
