Sizes, and How Much Each Holds

Single wide is the smallest common size and holds roughly a third of a gram. 1 1/4 is the everyday standard at around half a gram — enough for one person, quick to roll, and the size most people should default to. Both burn faster simply because there is less material.

King Size and King Slim

King size takes about a gram and is built for sharing or for a longer session. King slim is the same length but narrower, which gives a slower burn and less paper in the mix. If you are rolling for a group, this is the size; if you are rolling for yourself and finding half of it goes out in the ashtray, it is not.

Material, Bleaching and Burn Rate

Thin papers burn slower and interfere less with taste, but they are harder to roll and tear more readily. Thicker papers forgive clumsy hands and burn faster. That is the whole trade-off, and there is no correct answer — a beginner rolling thin papers has a worse time than a beginner rolling thick ones.

Unbleached papers are brown because nothing was done to whiten them. White papers have been processed to get there, and while the difference in taste is small, it is noticeable on a slow-burning joint. Most regular smokers end up on unbleached for that reason rather than any other.

Cones: When They Make Sense

A cone is a paper already rolled into shape with a tip fitted, so you fill and pack rather than roll. That removes the skill entirely, which is the point.

They cost more per unit than loose papers, and that is the honest trade. If rolling is something you enjoy, papers are cheaper and better. If rolling is the reason you reach for a pre-roll instead, cones give you the same convenience while letting you choose the flower yourself. Pack them from the open end and tap rather than compress — a cone packed too tightly will not draw.

Filter Tips Are Not Optional

A tip does three things: keeps the mouth end open so the joint draws properly, stops loose flower coming through, and gives the whole thing structure so it does not collapse as it burns down.

Rolling without one wastes the last portion of what you packed, because there is nothing to hold. Tips cost almost nothing and most packs of cones include them.
